How does acne
occur and what factors affect acne?
Acne occurs when special follicles or pores
with large oil glands
known as sebaceous follicles, become blocked
with excess oil
(sebum naturally moisturizes the skin and
hair), sloughed skin
cells and bacteria (P. acnes). Several factors
may trigger acne,
such as hormonal fluctuations (puberty,
menstrual cycle,
pregnancy and menopause), heredity or other
issues, such as
increased stress which can increase sebum
production. Physical
pressure or irritation to the face may contribute
to acne.
I’m an adult, why do I
keep getting acne?
No matter your age, gender or race, acne
affects individuals
from puberty to menopause. A common medical
condition
known as chronic, persistent acne can
follow some people
from adolescence to adulthood. Hormones
are usually the
primary culprit for adult acne.
What general treatments are available
for acne?
The most common treatments for mild acne
can be found
over the counter. Benzoyl peroxide and
salicylic acid are
common active ingredients used to clear
up and prevent acne
breakouts.
For moderate to severe acne, prescription
medications may be
necessary to prevent or control acne breakouts.
In more severe
cases, dermatologists should be consulted
for specialized
treatments.
